Bassinet Mattress
A bassinet mattress spends its whole working life under a newborn, which is the most important sleeping your baby will ever do. It has to be firm, it has to breathe, and it has to fit the bassinet exactly. Ours comes in three sizes, 340 x 710mm, 360 x 780mm and 380 x 800mm, all 50mm deep and all $64.95.
Bassinet mattress sizes
Fit is where most of these purchases go wrong. Bassinets, cradles and Moses baskets are not built to a shared measurement, and the gap between two common sizes is often only 20 or 40mm, which is enough to matter.
Ours is made in three sizes, each 50mm deep:
- 340 x 710 x 50mm
- 360 x 780 x 50mm
- 380 x 800 x 50mm
Measure the internal base of your bassinet before ordering rather than assuming. If the bassinet came with a mattress, measure that instead, because it is a more reliable guide than the frame. The new mattress should meet all four sides with no gap at the edges and sit flat rather than curling at the corners.

What to look for
- A firm surface. Australian safe sleeping guidance is consistent that infants belong on a flat base that does not give under their weight, and anything that feels comfortable under an adult hand is usually too soft for a newborn.
- An exact fit. The mattress should meet all four walls and lie flat, with no curling where the corners meet the frame.
- Airflow through the core. A breathable cover over a solid base still traps air where it matters.
- A cover you can take off. In the newborn months you will be glad of it.
- The right depth. A thick mattress raises your baby closer to the top of the bassinet wall, which is why ours are 50mm.
The Breathe Eze Bassinet Mattress
The core is a Breathe Eze bonded fibre pad. It holds a firm, level surface and lets air move through the body of the mattress rather than trapping it underneath your baby. It is the same construction we use across our cradle and cot mattresses, so the move from bassinet to cot does not mean changing what your baby is sleeping on.
The cover is removable for washing. Firmness is tested to AS/NZS 8811-1:2013, the Australian sleep surface test, and that testing applies to this $64.95 mattress the same way it applies to everything else in the range.
Why there is no foam in it
We do not use foam in our fibre mattresses, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a cost one. We believe foam can give off fumes that may affect a baby’s respiratory system. A newborn spends most of the day with their face inches from this surface, so it is the wrong place to take the risk.
What is inside instead is Breathe Eze polyester fibre. It is non toxic, non harmful and low VOC. The fibres are large and strong by design, which makes them non respirable, so they will not become an airborne pollutant in the bassinet. The same fibre is anti-microbial, and it is dust and mite allergy resistant, which is worth knowing if allergies run in your family.
Replacing a bassinet mattress
A lot of people arrive here replacing a mattress rather than buying a bassinet. Sometimes the original has worn out, sometimes a second child is on the way, and sometimes the bassinet was handed down without one.
If you are reusing a mattress, check three things. The surface should still be firm and even with no dip where your first child slept. The cover should be intact and clean up properly. And it should still fit the bassinet exactly, because mattresses can compress at the edges over time. A mattress that passes all three has life left in it. One that has softened in the middle does not, and a protector will not fix it.
If the bassinet was second hand and arrived without a mattress, do not improvise with a folded towel, a cut down foam offcut or a mattress from a different frame. A mattress that does not fit the base properly creates gaps at the edges, and that is the specific risk the fit is protecting against.
Cleaning and care
Wipe the surface with warm water and a mild detergent, and let it dry completely before the cover goes back on. Avoid bleach and abrasive cleaners. For anything more significant, take the cover off and wash it rather than working around it.
A mattress protector is worth adding. It sits between the mattress and the fitted bassinet sheet, takes the overnight spills, and keeps the mattress underneath clean for the months you are using it hardest. One protector and two bassinet sheets is usually the right number to keep in rotation.
After the bassinet
Bassinets are a short stage. Most babies outgrow one between three and six months, either by weight or by starting to push up, and the next mattress is a different size again. All of them use the same firm, breathable construction, so the change is a matter of measurement rather than starting the research again.
