What each one is actually for
The full size pram is the one you buy first and use for everything in the early months. It carries a newborn lying flat, it handles kerbs, gravel paths and grass without fighting you, it has the storage basket that holds a nappy bag and a shop, and it stays comfortable for a baby who is asleep in it for two hours.
The compact stroller is the second purchase, usually made somewhere between six and eighteen months, and it solves a different problem. It is the one that folds into an overhead locker, fits behind the driver’s seat of a small car, and comes to the shops when you know your child will walk half the time and be carried the rest.
The point where most families buy the second one
There is usually a specific trigger rather than a gradual realisation. A flight. A second child, when the full size pram becomes a double and something light is needed for quick trips. A change of car. Or simply the day your toddler starts walking and the pram becomes a thing you push empty more often than not.

What to look for in the compact one

Running both without the clutter
Two prams take up space, so it is worth deciding where each one lives. Most families keep the compact stroller permanently in the boot and the full size pram at home, which means the light one is always with you and the capable one is there when you plan for it.
Keep the rain cover with whichever pram you use most, check the tyres on the full size one every few months if it sits unused for stretches, and give both a wipe out occasionally, because whatever gets eaten in a pram stays in a pram.
